The Swearing Project
01/10/2011
I am very interested in people swearing. It was mysterious to me that why my friends swear often seem very funny, while many situations swear words can have very negative connotation. In Steven Pinker’s book "The Stuff of Thought", he talks about how our mind works psychologically when we use language to express ourself and also how brain process language, he also introduces the five types of swearing: Abusive, Cathartic, Dysphemism, Emphatic and Idiomatic. The fact that swear words function as a bell ring in our brains inspired me to work on this project.

This a balloon that responds to swear words. Whenever it detects sound of swear words, it inflates itself. Project using CMU Sphinx Speech Recognition & Arduino controlling an air pumper.

Prior to the balloon experiment, I first made an IPhone app called "The F*ck Counter" which reacts to the sound of f-word, with enlarging text and numbers of count on the screen.
